The topic of styling is such a subjective one. How then do we all know when something is chic or stylish?
When I first started styling, there were no courses offered in college. One simply assisted a fashion stylist and learned through osmosis I suppose. Kind of like a Mr. Miyagi situation. Well, that was how I learned and that was another lifetime ago.
I thought long and hard on how to make an easy blueprint for anyone to acquire this styling skill. Here’s what I’ve come up with. Try this and let me know how it works for you. This is styling 101.
1st, choose your focal point, meaning one piece of jewelry you want to focus your stack on. In the image I’ve attached, I chose a Rhodolite Aura ring as the star. It’s easy for this ring to be the star of the stack because she is so large, so visually your eyes will automatically jump to her.
2nd, complimentary or contrasting colors look great paired, meaning colors similar in hue or opposites on the color wheel. We chose to pair the Aurora ring with a ruby chain ring and a diamond chain ring. Notice we did not select 2 similarly shaped marquise gemstones. This gives visual movement and not a visual comparison. Note the accompanying rings are both much smaller in size.
3rd, in nature, odd numbers always look better than even numbers. I learned this visual trick in Art College. This is a simple stack of odd number of rings on two fingers. This is very 101. If you wanted to step it up, you could add in one or two small pinky rings. Please remember to skip a finger. This will give a visual contrast and not a comparison. Once you start comparing one to another, other pieces you’re wearing get forgotten. We don’t want that. We want the eyes to roam.
Try these 3 simple steps and let me know how it works for your everyday stack.
